State weapons law conceals information


More than 4,000 applicants were denied a Wisconsin concealed carry license and more than 400 had their licenses revoked or suspended in the program’s first 14 months, records show. These included dozens of felons, domestic abusers, illegal drug users and “fugitives from justice.”

A Columbia County Board committee met secretly last month to discuss changes in work rules that would affect hundreds of county employees. But as a consequence of Gov. Scott Walker’s law stripping collective bargaining rights from most public employees, such meetings must now be held in open session.

Journalist Dick Wheeler chosen for Distinguished Wisconsin Watchdog Award


Dick Wheeler, the late founder of the Wheeler Report, has been named the 2012 recipient of the Distinguished Wisconsin Watchdog Award in recognition of his four decades of tirelessly opening Wisconsin state government to public scrutiny.

The award is part of the second annual Wisconsin Watchdog Awards reception and dinner, presented jointly on Wednesday, April 25, by the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism, Wisconsin Freedom of Information Council and the Madison Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
